A combination of ground, crystallized, and fresh ginger gives these soft, chewy cookies their intense flavor.
Yield: Makes about 40
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/3 cup minced crystallized ginger 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature 1/2 cup (packed) golden brown sugar 1/2 cup (packed) dark brown sugar 1 large egg, room temperature 1/4 cup light (mild-flavored) molasses 1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated fresh peeled ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/3 cup (about) sugar
Preparation
Position 1 rack in top third and 1 rack in bottom third of oven; preheat to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk flour, crystallized ginger, baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until creamy and light, about 2 minutes. Gradually beat in both brown sugars. Beat on medium-high speed until creamy, about 3 minutes. Add egg, molasses, fresh ginger, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Beat to blend. Add flour mixture in 2 additions, beating on low speed just to blend between additions.
Place 1/3 cup sugar in small bowl. Measure 1 tablespoon dough. Roll into ball between palms of hands, then roll in sugar in bowl to coat; place on baking sheet. Repeat with remaining cookie dough, spacing cookies 1 1/2 to 2 inches apart.
Bake cookies until surfaces crack and cookies are firm around edges but still slightly soft in center, about 15 minutes. Cool completely on sheets on rack. DO AHEAD: Cookies can be made up to 4 days ahead. Store in airtight containers at room temperature.

We wrapped up our year at the Hotel Sofitel on December 9th. As always, the Sofitel was royal in their service. Wendy Gustafson, Mike Tindal and Chef Serge are truly the most gracious hosts. They know hospitality and it shows. The photos of the dinner speak for themselves. Sheree Bochenek from Apres and Matthew Sherry from Complete Music, two dedicated NACE members always, always giving of their resources and time, took our event to the next level. Matthew put together all of the photos taken through the year by Susan Austin and produced a video. Sheree's tabletops were fabulous like she is. Would you expect less from her?
This year we started a tradition of honoring the "Best NACE Program of the Year" and "Volunteer of the Year." I am excited about this! Susan Austin of Austin Images, was our Volunteer of the Year with endless hours to our organization. Endless spirit. The criteria for best program was the most well rounded and best collaboration of a theme execution with food, program content and decor. We provided the theme and they took it and ran with it. The board members attend all meetings so they voted and it split right down the middle. As President I am always to remain "neutral" when debate arises, so we honored both in a tie. The two most outstanding NACE events were August - Inside Outside Reversal - Prom Catering & Festivities at Loring Park and October - Chocolate and Spirits Pairing - Lancer Catering & Aarcee Classic Events at the Science Museum. Congratulations to all of these outstanding industry leaders.
We reflected on some of the successes of 2009 including 20 new full time members joining our group and a current database of 1400 people who have attended a NACE meeting in the last two years. I also recognized the hard work the Board of Directors does on a voluntary basis.
Looking ahead to 2010 we have a full program line up and RFP's are going for those 11 meetings currently. Some highlights? We have set our full day annual conference for April 7th and will be doing joint meetings with a few other industry associations. We will also be having elections for board positions in November - so emerging leaders please come forward!
I am grateful for our strong and growing organization! Best to all of you and your families.
